A daily tonic for the winter months to boost Vitamin C and soothe colds and the flu. Add a teaspoon of raw honey, a pinch of cayenne pepper and 3-4 tablespoons of tonic to a mug of hot water and sip away. Great for the kids too, they may just want a little extra honey and to skip the cayenne pepper! Always use organic produce where possible to reduce your exposure to pesticides, particularly as we use the whole fruits skin and all.
Give the lemons and limes a good wash before slicing them.
- one to two knobs of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped (the more you use the more kick the tonic will have)
- two to three lemons, sliced
- two limes, sliced
- one knob of fresh turmeric if you can get it, peeled and roughly chopped, if not a tablespoon of ground turmeric is fine.
- one litre of filtered water
In a large saucepan bring all the ingredients to the boil. Reduce to a simmer for about half an hour. When you check the liquid should have reduced and become a little syrupy. Further reduce if necessary. Strain into a glass jar and store in the fridge.
